Iran Looks to Equal Japan's Record in AFC Asian Cup

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran is looking to win the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 title to equal Japan's record for the most championships (4). Iran has not emerged champion since winning a third consecutive title in 1976.

Iran has played the most matches in the history of the AFC Asian Cup with 68, one more than Korea Republic. Iran also holds the record for the most victories in the tournament (41 matches), surpassing Korea Republic's 36 wins.

Iran tops the list of the highest scoring teams in the history of the AFC Asian Cup (131 goals), and only two teams have scored more than 100 goals in the history of the tournament (Korea Republic with 106 goals). Iran also holds the record for the most clean sheets (38 games).

Iran has the longest consecutive run of participation in the AFC Asian Cup, with Qatar 2023 their 15th appearance in the tournament since making their debut in 1968.

Iran has not lost in its last 20 group stage matches at the AFC Asian Cup (W15 D5) since losing to Iraq in 1996.
