Iran Expects Russia to Bar US’ Pro-Israel Resolution at UNSC

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Denouncing the US’ push to adopt a resolution at the UN Security Council in favor of the Zionist regime, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said Russia is expected to project influence, considering its place in the UNSC, to obstruct Washington’s sinister plans.

The Iranian president held a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Tehran on Monday. The top Russian diplomat was in Tehran to attend the 2nd meeting of the “3+3” Regional Platform about the South Caucasus developments.

Slamming the intervention of outsiders as a source of crisis, Raisi expressed hope that the results of the Tehran meeting would lead to the strengthening of security, stability and peace in the region and the resolution of differences between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“Iran is determined to implement bilateral agreements (with Russia) and emphasizes on speeding up and facilitating their implementation,” Raisi added, his official website reported.

On the situation in Gaza amid the brutal Israeli attacks, the president said, “What is happening in Gaza is a terrible crime against defenseless women and children that is taking place with the direct and official support of America and other Western countries.”

Referring to the US president’s admission that if the Zionist regime was not in the region, the United States would have taken steps to create it, Raisi said, “This statement means that the Americans are willing to sacrifice the blood of women and children and ruin the houses of the Palestinian people to secure their interests.”

“Today America is trying to achieve what it failed to achieve in the field in supporting the Zionist regime and securing its racist interests by passing a resolution in the UN Security Council,” Raisi stated.

“The nations and free people of the world hope that Russia will prevent the realization of the intentions of the Americans considering its position and influence in the Security Council as well as in the international stage,” the Iranian president noted.

For his part, Lavrov reaffirmed Russia's adherence to the implementation of all agreements with Iran in the economic, commercial, transportation, cultural and energy fields.

He noted that participation in the 3+3 meeting in Tehran is a manifestation of Russia's regional cooperation with Iran.

“In today's meeting, it was emphasized that the issues of the region should be resolved without the interference of outsiders,” Lavrov stated.

The meeting came against a backdrop of relentless Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip.

At least 5,087 Palestinians have been killed and thousands of others wounded in Israeli attacks since October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise operation outside Gaza.
