IAEA’s Recent Stance on Iran Not Constructive: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The UN nuclear agency is deemed to have adopted an unconstructive stance against Iran after the revelation of a report alleging that Tehran has accumulated enough enriched uranium for atomic bombs, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.

“Iran’s peaceful (nuclear) activities are based upon cooperation with the (International Atomic Energy) Agency and conform with the Safeguards (Agreement) and the NPT. This cooperation is in progress,” Nasser Kanaani said at a weekly press conference on Monday.

Asked about the IAEA’s latest report about Iran’s uranium enrichment, the spokesperson said such issues have been raised with certain motivations, adding that Iran deems such stances as not constructive.

Reaffirming Iran’s commitment to mutual cooperation with the IAEA, Kanaani stated that there has been no shortcomings in the fulfillment of Iran’s responsibilities. “The IAEA, in turn, is bound to fulfill its duties. The relationship between Iran and the IAEA is constant.”

His comments came after a confidential IAEA report on Wednesday alleged that Iran continues barring several experienced nuclear inspectors, and has enough uranium enriched to up to 60 percent purity, close to weapons-grade, for three atom bombs.

The UN nuclear watchdog on Wednesday criticized Iran’s decision to withdraw the accreditation of several inspectors as “extreme and unjustified” and said it “directly and seriously affected” the agency’s work.

Iran in September withdrew the accreditation of several inspectors in retaliation for “political abuses” by the United States, France, Germany and Britain.
