Moscow Condemns US Strikes in Yemen
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has criticized the recent Western airstrikes in Yemen, asserting that they are designed to heighten tensions in the Middle East.
The military action, led by the US and its allies, targeted numerous Yemeni military sites.
The Yemeni military forces targeted ships that were associated with Israeli regime in retaliation for the three-month bombardment of Plestinian civilians in Gaza.
Zakharova specifically pointed to the US as the primary force behind the action. In a social media post, she characterized the strikes as an illustration of the "total disregard for international law in the name of escalation of the situation for [Western] destructive goals." Zakharova promised to provide a more detailed statement later in the day.
According to US Central Command, the attacks in Yemen were carried out in coordination with the UK and received support from Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and Bahrain. The claimed Washington’s goal was to "de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea."
Moscow has accused the US of obstructing international efforts to address the Middle East conflict by blocking any proposed UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Israel initiated the campaign in response to a retaliatory attack by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in early October, claiming its objective is to eliminate the group but has so far killed over 23,000 people, mostly women and children.
Despite expressing concerns about the high number of civilian casualties, Washington has provided military support for the Israeli atrocities.
