Israel, Allies Must Be Brought to Account for Crimes in Gaza: Iranian FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign minister of Iran called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to hold the Zionist regime and its sponsors accountable for the crimes against humanity and the atrocities committed against Palestinians in Gaza.

Addressing the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday, Hossein Amirabdollahian said the UNHRC, known as the finest embodiment of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, must hold the Israeli regime and its supporters accountable for the anti-human atrocities in Gaza.

“The world is today witnessing full-fledged support from the United States of America and a number of its allies for the Zionist regime. Such backing amounts to actual complicity in genocide,” he said.

The Iranian top diplomat called on the international community not to allow the genocidal and gruesome crimes to become a normal routine.

The fulfillment of the human rights goals in the international arena is facing several serious challenges, including systematic and widespread homicide by the world’s only apartheid regime, namely the Zionist regime, Amirabdollahian stated.

Deploring the UN’s double standards, he said the saddening death of an Iranian girl last year triggered a lot of hullabaloo and resulted in the formation of a so-called fact-finding committee, while the international bodies have failed to take any serious action on the massacre of thousands of innocent women and children in Gaza.

The minister also highlighted Iran’s role in the fight against terrorism and extremism, stressing the need for concerted action and international cooperation in the war against terrorism as a global threat.

“Disappearance of terrorism requires, above all, an end to the instrumental use of terrorism by certain powers, including the US. It is most unfortunate that a number of Western states still continue to host terrorist elements. This is another example of contradiction and hypocrisy in the slogan of supporting human rights,” Amirabdollahian added.

He also decried unilateral punitive measures against countries as a violation of basic human rights.

“The imposition of unilateral sanctions against nations is an illegal measure that is tantamount to crime against humanity,” Amirabdollahian concluded.

The Iranian foreign minister is scheduled to hold meetings with his foreign counterparts and a number of UN officials during his stay in Geneva.

In remarks on December 23, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei denounced the West and the US for their false claims of human rights.

“Today, everyone is aware of these masquerades. They know what the truth is behind their use of words like ‘human rights’ and such things. The hideous, monstrous, evil faces of the US and England have been revealed to everyone in the world,” the Leader stated.

At least 29,690 Palestinians have been killed and 69,870 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.
