Iranian Oil Imported by Two EU States in 2023 despite Sanctions: Eurostat

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) announced the import of Iranian crude oil by two members of the European Union (EU) in 2023 in spite of the sanctions imposed against the Islamic Republic.

Eurostat figures indicate that one official member and one observer member of the European Union imported crude oil from Iran last year.

As an official member of the union, Bulgaria imported crude oil from Iran in 2023.

Bulgaria had imported only 168 tons of crude oil or oil byproducts from Iran in 2022 but the European country increased oil imports from Iran six-fold in 2023.

Eurostat said Bulgaria imported 1,058 tons of crude oil and its byproducts from Iran in 2023.

Although the volume of crude oil imported by Bulgaria from Iran in 2023 is negligible, it shows the European countries' desire to ignore the sanctions.

Eurostat figures also show that Georgia, as an observing member of the European Union, imported 4,438 tons of oil or oil byproducts from Iran in 2023, showing a 6% hike compared to a year earlier.

Georgia has imported over 4,161 tons of oil or oil byproducts in 2022.
