Iran Expects EU’s Effectual Initiative for Gaza Peace

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian foreign minister expressed hope that the European Union would come up with an effective initiative to stop the Israeli regime’s genocidal crimes in the Gaza Strip, voicing Iran’s readiness to contribute to the success of such a solution.

In a telephone conversation on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell discussed a range of regional and international issues, including the latest developments in Gaza and Iran’s recent retaliatory operation in response to the Zionist regime’s fatal airstrike on Iran’s diplomatic mission in Damascus.

Amirabdollahian noted that the repeated acts of aggression by the Zionist regime, including the attack on Iran’s advisory forces engaged in counterterrorism efforts in Syria and the armed attack on the Iranian diplomatic facilities in Damascus, are a blatant violation of the Vienna Convention and a clear crossing of Iran’s red lines, according to the Foreign Ministry’s website.

“In light of the diplomatic inaction of the United Nations and the Security Council in issuing a single statement condemning this action, the Islamic Republic of Iran had no recourse but to retaliate against the Zionist regime within the framework of legitimate defense,” he stated.

Highlighting the success of Iran’s military operation conducted within the boundaries of legitimate defense, the top Iranian diplomat highlighted, “Following the conclusion of the operation, a message was conveyed that, from the perspective of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the matter is concluded. However, should the Zionist regime resort to retaliatory measures, Iran’s response will be immediate, extensive, and maximal.”

Referring to the EU’s condemnation of the Israeli regime’s attack on the Iranian consular building in Damascus, Amirabdollahian said, “I hope that the European Union would take effective and efficient measures to end the genocide in Gaza. Of course, the Islamic Republic of Iran stands ready to support such endeavors for success.”

Borrell, for his part, acknowledged that Iran’s military response was within the realm of expectation, expressing satisfaction that the operation had concluded from the perspective of Iran.

“From the standpoint of the European Union, the assault on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus is condemned, as it violates the Vienna Convention,” he added.

Borrell also touched on EU’s diplomatic endeavors aimed at resolving the crisis in Gaza and alleviating the plight of the region’s populace, urging Iran to contribute to these efforts while exercising restraint.
