Iran Admires Algeria for Tabling Resolution on Palestine’s UN Membership
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign minister of Iran praised Algeria for proposing a draft resolution at the UN Security Council that recommended granting the State of Palestine full membership in the UN, taking a swipe at the US for its “irresponsible and unconstructive” veto on the bid.
Hossein Amirabdollahian and his Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf discussed a range of regional and international issues on the sidelines of a UN Security Council meeting in New York on Friday.
Amirabdollahian appreciated Algeria’s role in helping stop the Zionist regime’s genocide in Gaza and also presenting a resolution at the Security Council on Palestine’s UN membership.
He then strongly condemned the irresponsible and unconstructive US’ veto on the draft resolution.
In a vote of 12 in favor to one against, with two abstentions, the UN Security Council on Thursday did not adopt a draft resolution that would have recommended the General Assembly to hold a vote with the broader UN membership to allow Palestine to join as a full UN Member State.
Amirabdollahian then expressed Iran’s readiness to improve relations with Algeria at all political, economic and cultural levels, as well as the implementation of the previous agreements.
Hailing Algeria for its warm hospitality toward Iran’s president during his visit to the North African country for the OPEC gas summit, Amirabdollahian called for increased consultations and closer cooperation in order to stabilize and restore security in the region.
For his part, Attaf stressed the significance of expanding Algeria’s relations with Iran in the political, economic and cultural fields.
Appreciating the diplomatic efforts of Iran to stop the war against Gaza, Attaf said the issue of Palestine is a top priority for Algeria and that his country will continue its efforts to end the war.
The two ministers also underlined the need to follow up on the implementation of bilateral agreements.
