Chabahar A Main Transit Hub for India: Indian Minister

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – India's Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said that Iran’s Chabahar strategic port is a main transit hub for India.

Chabahar is an important port in terms of transit which can play an important role in connecting India with Afghanistan and landlocked countries, he said.

Today, Iran and India are witnessing a long-term contract in quipping and operating Shahid Beheshti Port of Chabahar, the Indian minister emphasized.

Sonowal said that signing this long-term contract indicates trust and friendship between the two countries, adding that the move, in addition to promoting trade activities between Iran and India, can improve the economic growth in the region and benefit regional countries.

He went on to say that the long-term contract inked between Iran and India for the development of Shahid Beheshti Port of Chabahar can create a better future for the two states, ISNA reported.

Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrpash and the Indian minister signed the contract on Monday for the partnership of India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL) in equipping and operating the freight and container terminals of Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar.

One of the major goals of concluding this contract, which was achieved as a result of the expert negotiations of joint task forces, is realizing the goals of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), the tripartite transit agreement of Iran, India and Afghanistan for international transit and transport through the Chabahar Port signed in 2016, and development of multimodal transit and transport cooperation between Iran and India in the Central Asian region within the framework of the strategic cooperation between India and Central Asia, the website of Iran’s Ministry of Roads and Urban Development (MRUD) reported.
