Iran, Bahrain Move to Restore Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Senior diplomats from Iran and Bahrain held a meeting in Tehran to pave the way for the resumption of political relations between the two neighbors.

Foreign Minister of Bahrain Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani, who has traveled to Tehran to take part in a meeting of the Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), held a meeting with Iranian Caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri on Sunday.

According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the meeting took place “within the framework of the historical, brotherly and religious ties, neighborhood, common history, and mutual interests” between the two states.

“During the meeting, the two sides agreed to establish the necessary mechanisms to start talks between the two countries to examine the resumption of political ties,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Bahraini government had severed its diplomatic relations with Iran in January 2016 after a same decision by Saudi Arabia.

The rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, mediated by China in March 2023, resulted in subsequent talks between Tehran and Manama on the reopening of embassies.
