Iran’s Russia Ties to Remain Unaffected under New Admin: Diplomat

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The change of administration in Iran would by no means alter Tehran’s strategic stance on the promotion of relations with Moscow, the Iranian caretaker foreign minister said a few days before the presidential election in Iran.

In a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Andrey Rudenko, held on the sidelines of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue meeting in Tehran, the Iranian caretaker foreign minister hailed the strategic relations between Tehran and Moscow.

Ali Baqeri expressed satisfaction with the finalization of the draft comprehensive strategic cooperation treaty between the two countries.

Highlighting the commitment of the two countries to deepening and expanding relations, he gave an assurance that the change of government in Iran will not undermine such strategic approach of Iran.

Iran is going to hold a nationwide presidential election on Friday, June 28. The polls will take place a year ahead of schedule, as Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi passed away in a helicopter crash on May 19.

Elsewhere in the meeting, Baqeri condemned a recent terrorist attack on Russia’s Dagestan and expressed solidarity with the Russian government and people.

He described terrorism as a tool of unilateralism used to exert pressure on independent countries like Iran and Russia, the ministry’s website reported.

For his part, Rudenko offered condolences over the tragic loss of the Iranian president and foreign minister.

The Russian diplomat expressed hope that the development of relations between the two countries would continue to progress positively.
