Tehran Pursuing Closer Ties with Baku: Caretaker FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Describing strong relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan as a top priority in Iran’s foreign policy agenda, Iranian Caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri said the joint economic projects have strategic importance for the two neighbors and the region.

In a meeting with the Republic of Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Samir Sharifov, held in Tehran on Thursday, Baqeri said the numerous commonalities between the two countries are a valuable asset for the promotion of ties in all fields.

Stepping up ties with the Republic of Azerbaijan is a top priority in the Islamic Republic of Iran’s foreign policy, he stated.

Baqeri noted that the deals the late Iranian president struck with his Azerbaijani counterpart in their last meeting were very crucial, and stressed that they should immediately be implemented, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

He also noted that the joint economic projects are strategically important for both countries and the region.

For his part, the Azeri deputy foreign minister said the last meeting between the presidents of the two countries and the inauguration of two border dams were a symbol of goodwill between the two neighbors and a factor for the convergence of the two nations.

He also emphasized that other joint projects, such as transportation projects, should be completed.

Sharifov stated that all possible obstacles in the bilateral ties should be tackled and the ties between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Iran should serve as a model for neighborly relations.
