Taj Happy with Iran’s Draw in 2026 World Cup Qualifiers

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Mahdi Taj, the head of Iran's Football Federation, is happy for short distance travel to countries which are drawn in Group A of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Iran will be aiming to progress to a fourth World Cup in a row -and seventh in total- after appearing in 2014, 2018 and 2022 and take on a Qatar side attempting to qualify for the tournament for the first time.

Qatar, Uzbekistan, the UAE, Kyrgyzstan and DPR Korea are also in Group A.

“There is no easy match in football but I think we have been drawn in a good group compared to the other groups,” Taj said.

“We will have short distance travel to Qatar, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and the UAE. We will negotiate with the DPR Korea football officials to face them in China or Malaysia,” he added.
