Official Dismisses Rumor of Security Incident in Iran’s Shiraz

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The deputy governor of Iran’s southern province of Fars dismissed rumors about a security incident at the Shah-e Cheragh shrine in Shiraz.

Speaking at the state TV on Monday night, the deputy provincial governor for political affairs stated that no security incident has taken place in the religious site.

Esmaeel Qezelsofla said the Monday evening’s panic in the vicinity of the Shah-e Cheragh shrine was caused by warning shots fired by the security forces.

He said the security agents suspected theft in the crowd and fired shots into the air to capture the thief, which caused anxiety.

The shire of Shah-e Cheragh is fully safe amid the mourning events in Muharram and the situation is completely under control, the official added.

In August 2023, an armed terrorist attack killed two people and injured eight others at the Shah-e Cheragh shrine.

The Shiite religious site was the scene of a similar attack in October 2022, when a terrorist barged into the shrine, killing 15 pilgrims, including women and children, and injuring dozens more before he was shot and injured by security forces.
