Iran Advises Europe to Act Independently

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The European countries’ relations with Iran will improve if they adopt policies independent of the US, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said.

Speaking to reporters at a weekly press conference on Monday, Kanaani bemoaned the lack of sufficient dynamism in the relations between Iran and Europe considering their capacities.

Asked about Europe’s cold response to the result of the recent presidential elections in Iran, the spokesman said the cold relations or the failure to employ the existing capacities result from “Europe’s miscalculations or bowing to pressure from the US”.

Kanaani stated that the bilateral relations will definitely improve if the European governments adopt independent policies towards Iran and rid themselves of US influence.

Asked about the US presidential election result’s impact on Iran’s foreign policy, the spokesman reiterated that Tehran does not care who is in charge of the US administrations.

What matters is that the US has taken a hostile policy against Iran, Kanaani noted, adding, “A fundamental change in the US’ hostile policies could change the atmosphere.”

In remarks in September 2019, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said the way to establish relations with Europe is open, but the Iranian officials should by no means trust the countries that openly show hostility.

Highlighting the potentials for establishing ties with other countries of the world, the Leader asserted, “One point about Europe and the foreign policy affairs is that we have not closed the door for establishing relations and negotiating with any country in the world, apart from the Zionist Regime and the US.”

The Leader called on Iranian officials to avoid relying on the European heads of states, adding, “But, as frequently mentioned before, we should not at all place hope and trust on anyone except for the domestic forces, in particular, not on those that have raised the flag of hostility against the Islamic Republic and the Islamic establishment, firstly led by the US, and next by the European countries.”
