Generals Urge Promotion of Iran-Belarus Ties
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Senior military commanders from Iran and Belarus weighed plans to broaden interaction between the two nations against common threats, including the US sanctions and the expansion of NATO.
During a visit to Tehran on Wednesday, Commander of the Air Force of Belarus Andrey Lukyanovich held separate meetings with Iran’s Army Commander Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi and Air Force Commander Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh.
In one of the meetings, the Iranian Army chief said Tehran and Minsk face common threats and have mutual interests.
Denouncing the sanctions imposed by the US and Western governments against Iran and Belarus, General Mousavi said both nations are standing against the US’ unilateralism and the expansion of NATO.
Hailing Belarus’ “strategic and special position” against NATO expansion, the Iranian general praised the fair and independent stances that Minsk has adopted on the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh.
He also highlighted Iran’s determination to enhance military and defense cooperation with Belarus, saying Iran has valuable experiences in standing against the world powers during eight years of war in the 1980s and in fighting against terrorism.
The Iranian general also called for the exchange of experiences with Belarus, which he said has gained valuable experiences, specifically in the Ukraine war.
For his part, the Belarusian general expressed his country’s willingness to broaden and deepen military relations with Iran.
Belarus is opposed to the US’ unilateralism and the expansion of NATO, Lukyanovich added.
He also lauded Iran’s air defense capabilities against hostile threats, inviting the Iranian Army chief to visit Belarus.
During Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s state visit to Iran in March 2023, the two states signed a road map to comprehensive cooperation in addition to several agreements in various fields.
