Iran Welcomes Formation of Interim Government in Bangladesh

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran welcomed the formation of an interim government in Bangladesh headed by Muhammad Yunus.

In a statement on Saturday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani expressed hope for the full restoration of calm to Bangladesh, which is demanded by the South Asian nation’s people.

He also hoped that a general parliamentary election will be held in Bangladesh and a formal government will take office as soon as possible.

Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus has returned to Bangladesh to head an interim government after weeks of student-led protests forced the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, to resign and flee to India.

On his arrival in Dhaka on August 8, the 84-year-old economist and head of the interim government spoke of a "glorious day."

Yunus has been sworn in as "chief adviser" to the caretaker government. He has been tasked with leading a democratic process aimed at elections.
