Iran Proposes Creation of BRICS-Specific Security Format

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian proposed establishing a unique security structure within the BRICS.

Ahmadian has taken part in the meeting of the BRICS and BRICS Plus high-ranking officials responsible for security matters and national security advisers, held at the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library of St. Petersburg in Russia.

Addressing the conference on Wednesday, the Iranian official said that BRICS, considering its population, breadth and economy, can invent a new security arrangement in the international arena to contribute to global security and order.

He then came up with the idea of establishment of a BRICS-specific security structure, dubbed ‘BRICS Security Commission’, and a change in the mechanisms for mutual cooperation for international peace and security to counter the common threats, such as terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, the abuse of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and satellites, maritime insecurity, human trafficking, illegal biological activities, and cyber-threats.

“In parallel with economic cooperation, the BRICS members can found a new security system in the world in order to address the weaknesses of the existing security system,” Ahmadian stated.

He also touched on the conflict in Ukraine, stressing that Iran would support any peace plan agreed on by Russia and Ukraine, such as the initiatives developed by China and Brazil.

The Iranian official also suggested that BRICS should task a group with pursuing a plan for peace in Ukraine.
