TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi attended a meeting of ten foreign ministers from the BRICS member states at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

During the meeting, chaired by Brazil’s foreign minister, Araqchi stressed that BRICS has a huge potential in the Southern World and can play an effective role in elevating the member states’ status and bringing about positive developments and changes in the global systems.

He said the enthusiasm by many countries to join the grouping indicates its outstanding position in the developing world.

Highlighting Iran’s serious and active participation in BRICS activities since its membership last year, the Iranian foreign minister called for more serious cooperation among the member states in areas such as using their own national currencies in commercial transactions.

Araqchi also called for the member states' cooperation and participation in the energy supply and demand security and expressed Iran's readiness to present definite proposals in these areas, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

The top Iranian diplomat also underlined that BRICS carries a lot of weight in international relations and systems, and suggested that the group of leading economies can help change the global paradigm of progress based on the goals of developing countries, explaining that the paradigm seeks to establish fair and non-discriminatory international organizations and systems.

Araqchi further warned that the situation in Gaza and Lebanon is alarming and deplored the international community’s inability and failure to stop the occupying Zionist regime’s crimes during the past 12 months.

He reiterated that Iran will not remain indifferent to an all-out war in Lebanon.

Pointing to the upcoming meeting of BRICS leaders in the Russian city of Kazan on November 2, the Iranian foreign minister suggested that a part of the meeting be allocated to extraordinary talks between the leaders on the crisis in Gaza.

The ten foreign ministers of the BRICS member states also held talks on preparing documents for the Russian summit.
