Iranian Parliament Speaker Calls for Regional Parliamentary Convergence Pact
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, urged regional countries to unite under a parliamentary convergence pact to foster peace and development.
Speaking at the International Conference marking the 30th anniversary of Tajikistan's Constitution in Dushanbe on October 11, 2024, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Speaker of Iran's Islamic Consultative Assembly, proposed the signing of a "Parliamentary Convergence Pact" among regional nations.
The initiative, he said, would promote peace, sustainable development, and enhanced multilateral diplomacy in response to shared challenges such as terrorism, extremism, and climate change.
Qalibaf underscored that Iran and Tajikistan share a deep cultural and historical bond rooted in their common Persian language, which has historically bridged the intellectual and cultural ties between the two nations.
He highlighted how this rich heritage could serve as a foundation for strengthening bilateral cooperation in key sectors such as culture, education, and science. “Today, this cultural richness can be a strategic asset for enhancing our mutual development,” Qalibaf said.
Economically, Qalibaf pointed to the significant potential for collaboration between Iran and Tajikistan, noting Tajikistan's rich natural resources and strategic geographic position. He emphasized Iran’s readiness to assist Tajikistan in developing its infrastructure, energy sectors, and industrial capabilities through joint projects.
The enhancement of transport and communication networks, he added, would not only boost trade exchanges but also better connect Tajikistan to international markets with Iran serving as a crucial gateway.
In his speech, Qalibaf condemned the criminal actions of the Zionist regime, particularly its assassination of Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, describing it as part of a broader Israeli strategy of airstrikes and assassinations that cannot compensate for strategic failures.
He urged a ceasefire to protect the rights of the people of Gaza and Lebanon, calling on regional parliaments to respond to the "lawless and brutal acts" by the Zionist regime.
Proposing the establishment of a joint parliamentary council, Qalibaf called on regional countries to work together in a structured diplomatic framework, advancing dialogue and mutual understanding to resolve misunderstandings and secure peace. He expressed confidence that such a mechanism would promote long-term stability and prosperity across the region.
Qalibaf also emphasized the progress made in recent years between Iran and Tajikistan in strengthening their relationship, but he noted that there remains untapped potential for deeper cooperation.
“Iran and Tajikistan’s historical, cultural, and linguistic connections provide a solid basis for a long-term strategic partnership,” Qalibaf said.
He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to supporting Tajikistan’s development, adding, “Iran will always be a friend and companion of Tajikistan.”
