Spanish Artists, Intellectuals Demand End to Arms Trade with Israel

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Over 300 prominent Spanish artists, intellectuals, and academics have signed a letter urging Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to impose a complete arms embargo on Israel, citing the regime’s ongoing violence in Gaza and Lebanon.

The letter, reported by Turkey's Anadolu Agency, expresses profound concern over Spain's continued trade in arms and military equipment with Israel.

The signatories called for an immediate halt to all arms sales and military cooperation with Israel, emphasizing the need for urgent action.

Among the notable figures supporting the appeal are film directors Pedro Almodóvar and Isabel Coixet, musicians Rozalén and Mikel Izar, actors Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and Alba Flores, and comedian Andreu Buenafuente.

The letter warns, "As long as Spain maintains military relations with Israel, it will continue to be complicit in this massacre."

The group demanded that the Sánchez government take stronger measures to protect civilians and support the Palestinian and Lebanese people.

The signatories condemned the "daily massacres carried out by Israel for months" and criticized Madrid’s ongoing military ties with the regime.

While Spain announced in October 2023 that it had halted arms sales to Israel over the genocidal war in Gaza, new investigations reveal that weapons transfers have continued.

Since October 2023, the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip has resulted in the deaths of more than 42,700 Palestinians and left nearly 100,000 injured.

Earlier this year, the United Nations' top court ordered Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, but international efforts to end the violence have so far failed.
