Polls Open for Parliamentary Elections in Georgia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Voting for Georgia's parliamentary elections opened nationwide at 8 a.m. local time (0400 GMT) on Saturday, marking the country's first fully proportional election for a parliament composed of 150 seats.

More than 3.5 million voters are eligible to cast their ballots in 3,111 polling stations, including 67 stations opened abroad, Xinhua reported.

For the first time, electronic devices are being used in the voting process, and about 90 percent of voters use special voter verification equipment to confirm their identity.

Georgia's political parties were pushed to form coalitions in order to pass the 5 percent threshold under the country's proportional representation system.

Over 100 local and dozens of international organizations were registered to observe the elections.

Preliminary election results are expected to be announced two hours after the polls close at 8 p.m. local time.
