UN Security Council Condemns Attacks on Peacekeepers in Lebanon
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has strongly condemned recent attacks on the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, urging respect for UN personnel's safety as Israeli operations in the region intensify.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the 15-member Security Council “condemned the several incidents that impacted United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) positions and injured UNIFIL peacekeepers in recent weeks.”
The Council emphasized the need for parties involved in the war on Lebanon to ensure the security of UNIFIL personnel and facilities, stating that peacekeepers “must never be the target of an attack.”
Israel has been conducting ongoing military operations across Lebanon, with escalated violence following the onset of its genocidal campaign in Gaza.
According to Lebanon’s health ministry, Israeli attacks have resulted in 3,287 fatalities and 14,222 injuries since last year.
On October 1, Israel launched a ground invasion of Lebanon. Since then, UNIFIL positions have been repeatedly targeted, affecting an international peacekeeping contingent of over 10,000 civilian and military personnel from 50 countries.
Last week, UNIFIL condemned the “deliberate and direct destruction” of its property by Israeli forces, calling it a “flagrant violation of international law.”
The UNSC, in its statement, reiterated “full support” for UNIFIL and acknowledged the contributions of countries supplying troops. The Council also expressed “deep concern” over civilian casualties, damage to infrastructure, and cultural sites in Lebanon, as well as the rising number of internally displaced persons.
The UNSC called for the full implementation of Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Israel-Lebanon war, urging all parties to commit to its terms.
