Iran Rejects Canada-Drafted UN Resolution on Human Rights
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman rejected a human rights resolution against Tehran initiated by Canada and adopted by the UN General Assembly, saying it was based on unsubstantiated allegations and lacked legitimacy.
In a statement on Wednesday, Esmaeil Baqaei reacted to the passing of the human rights resolution against Iran at the UN General Assembly, saying Canada's move to draft the resolution with the support of some other Western countries based on unfounded claims and incorrect generalizations lacks legal validity and is fundamentally rejected.
He stressed Iran's commitment to preserving and respecting human rights as a legal, religious and moral necessity according to the Iranian Constitution and relevant laws, as well as according to the principles of Islam. Baqaei reiterated that Iran spares no effort in this regard.
The spokesman noted that the majority of UN member states have expressed their dissatisfaction with the abuse of the UN General Assembly and the use of human rights as a tool for political gain by voting against, abstaining or not attending the meeting.
Baqaei noted that such unjustified actions by certain countries, who have a long history of gross violations of human rights -including military and political support for occupation and genocide in Palestine- do not contribute to improving the state of human rights or respecting it globally, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.
Such acts merely diminish the noble concept of human rights and reduce it to a political pressure tool against nations, he warned.
The spokesman also stressed that those who pushed the anti-Iranian resolution, including the Zionist regime, the US, Britain and Canada, are among the major violators of human rights.
He described the move as a source of shame and urged the Canadian officials, who each year take similar actions against Iran, to focus on correcting their own domestic and foreign policies instead of accusing others.
Baqaei called on Canada to put an end to systematic policies aimed at arrogantly eliminating indigenous populations and demanded accountability for complicity in genocide and war crimes by Israel against the Palestinian people.
