Iran’s Distrust of US Prevails: Araqchi

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has not received any given message from the administration of US President Donald Trump about negotiations, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said, describing the distrust of the US as a basis after its violation of the JCPOA.

Asked by reporters whether Trump has sent a message to Iran about fresh negotiations, Araqchi said on the sidelines of a weekly cabinet session on Wednesday, “No specific message has been sent or received. These issues are mooted in the media.”

He noted that the talks with the European parties are underway, adding that Tehran is waiting to know about the stances of the other side.

If Iran comes to the conclusion that negotiations may be conducted with the US, such talks will be held on equal standing, Araqchi stated, adding that Tehran has not arrived at such a conclusion for now.

“While we had made an agreement in the past, they (the US) scrapped the deal,” the foreign minister said, referring to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) from which the US withdrew in 2018.

He said any stance towards the US is currently based upon distrust, adding that the US cannot win Iran’s trust with nice words, but has to act in practice.
