US’ Push for Talks Inconsistent with Threats: Iran’s President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian lambasted a contradiction between the US administration’s call for negotiations and its threats against Iran, stressing that Tehran would only approve of talks on equal standing.

In a meeting with a group of high-ranking administrative and military officials on Saturday, Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of interaction with other states in Iran’s foreign policy.

Pointing to his American counterpart’s eagerness for talks with Iran, the president said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran favors dialogue on equal terms.”

Pezeshkian dismissed the US’ paradoxical policy of threatening Iran and calling for negotiations at the same time.

“Today, the US behaves humiliatingly not only towards Iran, but the whole world. Such a manner is in contradiction to the request for negotiations,” the Iranian president added.

Last week, Pezeshkian said while Tehran has ruled out the possibility of direct talks with the US in its reply to a letter from Trump, it has considered indirect negotiations as a viable option.

Pezeshkian has announced that the only trouble in the course of interaction has been a lack of commitment on the part of the US, stressing that mistakes need to be made up for and trust must be rebuilt.

“This will be the manner of Americans that would determine the continuity of the course of negotiations,” the Iranian president said on March 30.
