Iran-West Nuclear Deal Possible in 3 Months: Larijani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said the West can come to an agreement with Tehran over the nuclear issue in a short time.

“If you are sincere, you can reach a deal with Iran in three months… We are prepared to secure a (final) agreement (on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program) in two or three months,” Larijani said Friday, while addressing a ceremony marking the 34th anniversary of a failed US operation in Tabas Desert, east of Iran.

Stressing that Iran is serious in nuclear negotiations with the world powers, the Iranian parliament speaker urged the other side not to repeat their past behaviors and to be aware that “they are facing a powerful and ingenious Iran”.

Larijani added that the West should realize that the nuclear issue will be resolved once they recognize Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear technology, research and enrichment.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) in November last year signed an interim deal on Tehran’s nuclear case, which stipulates that over the course of six months, the parties will draw up a comprehensive nuclear deal which will lead to a lifting of the whole sanctions on Iran.

The two sides wrapped up their latest round of high-level nuclear talks in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on April 9.

There will be a fresh round of high-level talks between Iran and the sextet in Vienna beginning on May 13.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Larijani, referred to the US failure in Tabas in 1980 as a great shock to the world’s hegemonic powers.

On April 25, 1980, the United States launched Operation Eagle Claw in an attempt to rescue Americans held in the Iranian capital of Tehran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

However, a sandstorm struck and brought down the US helicopters involved in the operation, killing eight American servicemen.

The US Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps were all involved in the operation.

The botched attempt brought further disgrace to the administration of former US President Jimmy Carter in the eyes of the American public.

Many believe it played a major role in Carter's defeat in the 1980 presidential election.

Iran marks the event every year as a symbol of US failure.
