Iran Denounces Powers’ Undue Influence over Int’l Organizations
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian first vice-president on Tuesday voiced Tehran’s opposition to what he called the big powers’ interference in the affairs of the international organizations, insisting that all nations should be placed on the equal footing in those circles.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran believes the international organizations are venues for the exchange of views with the equal domination of the countries, and should not be places for the interference and use of influence by the big powers,” Eshaq Jahangiri said on Tuesday.
He made the comments in a meeting with Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Hamadoun Toure in the Iranian capital of Tehran.
Hailing the “very good potential and capacities” of the international organizations like that of the ITU, Jahangiri made it clear that such institutions can make a significant contribution to development of the world nations.
He also described Iran as “one of the most developed countries in the region”, saying Tehran expects the ITU to help accelerate its progress in the area of information technology and communication.
For his part, Toure hailed Iran’s “young, educated and creative” population, saying the Iranian youth can do great jobs if furnished with the appropriate tools in the field of telecommunications technology.
There are currently some 45 million internet users in Iran. The Islamic Republic is seen as the leading country in the Middle East region in terms of Internet penetration. It has already been awarded the UNESCO special certificate for providing telecommunication services to rural areas.
