Howard Webb Hangs Up Whistle

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Top English referee Howard Webb has brought an end to his 25-year career as a referee on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old has officiated 500 Premier League and Football League matches as well as the 2010 World Cup final.

Webb, who started his career in 1989, took charge of matches at this year's World Cup in Brazil, English media reported.

He refereed the Group C match between Colombia and Ivory Coast, and the first knockout match between Brazil and Chile.

"I am very excited to start this new chapter in my career after a wonderfully rewarding 25 years on the pitch," Webb said in a statement.

"I have spent over a decade with the best seat in the house for Barclays Premier League matches, been lucky enough to be involved in nine UEFA and FIFA tournaments, and taken charge of the UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup finals."
