Iranian Envoy, Iraqi Figures Discuss Political Process
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's Ambassador to Iraq Hassan Danaeifar met with a number of high-ranking Iraqi officials to discuss a range of issues, including recent political developments in Iraq.
In a meeting on Sunday, Danaeifar and the head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, Ammar al-Hakim, hailed the appointment of Haider al-Abadi as Iraq’s new prime minister designate and expressed optimism about the current political process in the country.
Hakim emphasized the importance of the concerted efforts by everyone to get Iraq out of its current security crisis, National Iraqi news Agency reported.
In a separate meeting with the head of the Sunni Muttahidoon Coalition, Usama al-Nujayfi, Danaeifar discussed Tehran-Baghdad relations and the recent developments in Iraq, including ongoing efforts for the formation of the new Iraqi government.
The two sides also exchanged views on the security situation in Mosul, especially after the invasion of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group.
Earlier on Saturday, Danaeifar had met with the head of National Iraqi Alliance, Ibrahim al-Jaafari, discussing ways towards Iraq's security, economic and political progress in light of the new international support for the country.
During the past few days, Iranian politicians have all supported Iraqi political developments and praised Nouri Al-Maliki’s decision to step down in favor of Haider Al-Abadi.
Maliki stepped down on Thursday to make way for Abadi in an effort to “safeguard the high interests of the country.”
