Iran, Iraq Share Concerns about Syria: Pezeshkian

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Calling for plans to ensure Syria’s stability and territorial integrity, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran and Baghdad have common concerns about the situation in Syria.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani in Tehran on Wednesday, Pezeshkian said they have held good negotiations about regional developments and the expansion of bilateral cooperation in various fields.

Iran and Iraq share concerns about the ongoing developments in Syria, Pezeshkian said.

He noted that Tehran and Baghdad insist on stability and calm in Syria, protection of its territorial integrity, fight against terrorist groups, and the need for the withdrawal of the Israeli forces from the regions they have occupied in Syria.

“The threat of terrorism and the possibility of a resurgence of terrorist cells were among the common concerns and issues discussed today, which highlights the need for vigilance and cooperation between the two countries,” the Iranian president added.

Pezeshkian also pointed to negotiations about the comprehensive cooperation agreement between Iran and Iraq and the full implementation of a bilateral security deal.

Describing Iraq as a major neighbor and a “strategic partner” of Iran, Pezeshkian said Iran always advocated peace, stability and development for its neighbors. “The security, progress and welfare of the Iraqi people are highly significant for us.”

Heading a high-ranking delegation, the Iraqi prime minister arrived in Tehran on Wednesday morning for an official visit.
