Iran Team Fly to New York for UN General Assembly, Nuclear Talks
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A delegations of Iranian diplomats, led by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, left Tehran on Tuesday for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly and also hold nuclear talks with six world powers.
On the sidelines of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69), Iranian diplomats will hold a new round of nuclear negotiations with representatives from the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.
According to Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi, who is also a senior member of the country’s nuclear team, the fresh round of talks will kick off on Wednesday with a working lunch between Zarif and the outgoing European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton.
In their meetings, the two officials will decide on how to proceed with the negotiations.
Succeeded by Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini, Ashton still coordinates diplomacy with Iran on behalf of the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) to settle a decade-long standoff on Tehran’s nuclear case.
On September 17 and 18, the Iranian nuclear negotiators will hold separate bilateral meetings with delegates from the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3), Araqchi added.
Last November, the two sides signed an interim deal in Geneva, which took effect on January 20 and expired six months later on July 20. In July, Tehran and the six countries agreed to extend negotiations until November 24 after they failed to reach common ground on a number of key issues.
