Iraqi DM Hails Iran’s Support in Countering Terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iraq’s Defense Minister Khaled al-Obeidi commended neighboring Iran for its “influential support” for Baghdad in the fight against terrorism.

In a Monday meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq Hassan Danaiefar, held in Baghdad, Obeidi also emphasized the necessity for security cooperation between the two Muslim neighbors.

Baghdad is ready to further enhance its relations with Tehran during the new Iraqi administrations’ term, the minister stated.

Danaiefar, for his part, congratulated the Iraqi defense minister on his new post and expressed the Islamic Republic’s readiness for security cooperation with the Arab country.

He also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to supporting Iraq in countering terrorism.

Iraq has been facing the growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group.

The ISIL militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

They have been committing heinous crimes including the mass execution of civilians as well as Iraqi army troops and officers.
