Iran, Chile Discuss Enhancement of Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Ranking diplomats from Iran and Chile in a meeting in Tehran called for the expansion of bilateral relations in light of the two countries’ influential role in their respective regions.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi and Chile’s new accredited ambassador to Tehran, Christian Boros, held a meeting in the Iranian capital on Sunday.

Receiving a copy of the Chilean envoy’s credentials, the Iranian diplomat emphasized the necessity for closer ties between the two nations given Iran’s clout in the Middle East and West Asia and also Chile’s position in South America.

Sarmadi also called for the broadening of political, cultural and parliamentary ties, saying the two nations can forge stronger economic relations in the mines and metals sector.

The Chilean diplomat, for his part, said he hopes that Tehran-Santiago ties will reach such a high level during his tenure that Chile would appoint a resident ambassador in Iran.

The promotion of all-out cooperation with Latin American countries has been among the top priorities of the Islamic Republic's foreign policy over the past few years.

Back in September, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani voiced Tehran’s enthusiasm for closer relations with the Latin American nations in messages to congratulate Chile on its independence day.
