Iran Urges UNSC’s Condemnation of Israeli Airstrike on Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian official called for a “strong response” by the United Nations Security Council to Israel’s recent air raids on Syria for preventing recurrence of such aggressive moves in future.
“The Zionist regime’s recent violation of Syria’s airspace is a move against that country’s sovereignty and national security and was aimed at supporting terrorists,” Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said in a meeting with Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi, in Tehran on Tuesday.
Shamkhani urged the UN Security Council and the world states to show reaction to the airstrike “decisively” to prevent similar future attacks.
According to the Syrian military, Israeli planes bombed an area near Damascus international airport and the town of Dimas on December 7.
Shamkhani further reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to backing Syria, voicing Tehran’s preparedness to expand strategic cooperation with the Arab country in different fields.
The visiting Syrian PM, for his part, expressed gratitude to Iran for its constant efforts to supportthe resistance front and provide security and welfare for the Syrian nation since the onset of crisis in 2011.
Iran, a staunch ally of Syria, has been giving its support to Syria’s legitimate government in countering the foreign-backed militants.
The Arab country has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with ISIL Takfiri terrorists currently controlling parts of it mostly in the east.
The US and its regional allies have been supporting the militants operating inside Syria for more than three years.
An estimated 200,000 people have been killed in over three years of fighting in the war-ridden country, according to the United Nations.
