Iran Trade Official Urges Further Cooperation with Turkey

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce Gholam Hossein Shafei said on Tuesday that Iran-Turkey trade ties should not be confined merely to commodity exchange, and asked closer cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

Iran and Turkey have plans to hike up the volume of their trade exchange to $30 billion by 2015.

Shafei referred to the plans to boost economic ties, and stated that the figure ($30 billion) shows the high economic potentials of Tehran and Ankara.

“(The two countries) should put their entire efforts to expand their cooperation,” he said in a meeting with Turkish businessmen in Tehran.

At the same time, he said, the improvement of Iran-Turkey trade ties can result in boosting the existing low level of economic cooperation between D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) member states.

He also mentioned that the bilateral ties should not be limited to commodity exchange, and the two countries should take appropriate measures in the field of joint ventures.

“In the past three years, 29 Iranian delegations have visited Turkey, and 30 Turkish delegations visited Iran,” he added, saying that it indicates the mutual interest of the two countries to further improve their cooperation.
