Iranian Spokeswoman: Yemen on Brink of Humanitarian Disaster

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham expressed deep concern over the appalling conditions of war victims in Yemen, saying that the Saudi regime’s siege on the Arab country has made the situation worse.

“We expect the international community to pay a special attention to the Yemeni crisis,” Afkham told reporters at her weekly press briefing in Tehran on Wednesday.

“Yemen is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe,” she cautioned.

“The blockade on Yemen is an unforgivable move and will remain in the memories of Arab nations,” the Iranian spokeswoman said.

She further expressed sorrow over the Saudi regime’s recent move to bomb Sana’a airport to prevent Iranian airplanes carrying humanitarian aid from landing in Yemen, saying that the move has also restricted assistance from other countries.

Fighter jets of Saudi Arabian-led coalition bombed the runway of Sana'a airport on April 28 to prevent an Iranian plane from landing in the Yemeni capital.

Following the attack, the Iranian foreign ministry summoned Saudi Arabia's charge d’affaires to protest at the move.

This was the second time in just a few days that Iran's foreign ministry summoned the Saudi diplomat for the same reason.

The protest came a week after another Iranian plane carrying humanitarian goods for the war-torn people of Yemen was forced to return to Tehran after Saudi Arabia's fighter jets refused the cargo plane landing in Yemen.
