Unwavering Support for Syria Iran's Strategic Decision: Diplomat
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy foreign minister reaffirmed the country's commitment to supporting Syria in the fight against foreign-backed terrorism.
Iran's strategic decision is to keep lending full support to Syria in the fight against terrorism and help the Arab country put the imposed crisis behind it, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said in a Monday meeting with a group of Syrian political and social activists in Tehran.
He also hailed Syria's recent victories over the foreign-backed militants, including the Syrian army's success to make major advances in Qalamoun region.
In addition to victories in the battle field, Amir Abdollahian said, Syrians, by maintaining unity, will definitely thwart the enemies' psychological war plots.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 220,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.
The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group controls a territory covering areas between Syria and Iraq.
In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
Tehran insists that the Syrian nation is the only sides that has the right to shape the future of its own country, rejecting foreign intervention with the use of force.
