Afghan Forces Retake Jawand District from Taliban Militants

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Afghan forces managed to recapture Jawand district in the northwestern province of Badghis after two days of heavy clashes with Taliban militants, army officials said on Tuesday.

According to Tasnim dispatches, Afghanistan's army retook control of the district, which had fallen into the hands of the insurgents on Sunday.

An afghan army commander said that after the town had been captured by Taliban, the army forces mounted a major operation to liberate it.

Jawand is the largest district of Badghis Province and its population is estimated at 186,000.

The clashes came after Taliban representatives met with Afghan political figures earlier this month in Qatar.

The two sides reportedly discussed a possible ceasefire but ultimately disagreed over the continued presence of US troops in the country.
