Iranian FM Lauds Algeria’s Regional Role

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif praised the Algerian government for its constructive stances towards regional conflicts, including the crises in Syria and Yemen.

“The role of Algeria, as a major government with principled and serious stances in the Middle East and North Africa and regarding the region’s crises, such as (crises in) Syria and Yemen, is very useful and constructive,” Zarif said on Wednesday.

He made the comments in a meeting with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in the North African country.

Zarif also touched on the cultural, economic and political commonalities between Iran and Algeria, expressing the hope that an upcoming meeting of the two countries’ High Joint Commission would help promote mutual cooperation in oil and gas industries, banking and tourism.

Bouteflika, for his part, emphasized the need for expansion of ties between Tehran and Algiers in all fields.

The Algerian president also called for coordination and unity among the regional countries for countering the common threat posed by terrorism and extremism.

Iran’s foreign minister is in Algeria in the second leg of his latest tour of the regional countries, which also took him to Tunisia.
