Source: Redesign of Iran’s Arak Reactor Discussed at IAEA Conference
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The establishment of an international consortium for the reconfiguration of Iran's heavy water plant in Arak has been discussed by US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz and the Group 5+1 at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) general conference, a source said.
"He (Moniz) certainly touched upon this issue (the establishment of an international consortium for the reconfiguration of the Iranian reactor in Arak) in contacts with the Russian delegation, he was talking about this subject with the Iranians, and hinted he will speak with France. Perhaps, with other delegations too," Sputnik quoted a senior diplomatic source familiar with the negotiations as saying on Wednesday.
"About the Arak, there was a general agreement that China takes care of this issue and will mediate in the talks with the Iranians, but nothing has been decided about the number of participants, financing, the sequence of work, or terms of work specifically," the source added.
"So now we need to bring it all up, and most importantly, to create a group of interested countries, so that they were engaged in this business," the source further said.
On September 14, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi and US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz met in the Austrian capital, Vienna.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Fifty-Ninth Regular Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in the Austrian city.
According to reports, Moniz and other members of the US delegation had several meetings on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) signed between Iran and world powers in Vienna on July 14 and also on the issue of Arak heavy water reactor.
