Iranian President Calls for IAEA’s Impartial Approach to JCPOA
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to evenhandedly monitor the implementation of a nuclear agreement recently reached between Tehran and six world powers, also known as the JCPOA.
Speaking Sunday in a meeting with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano in Tehran, Rouhani described the duties of the UN’s nuclear watchdog as “significant and complicated” in technical, legal and political arenas.
“We would like (to see that) the world’s public opinion trust the IAEA, because confidence in the important institution will give calm to the world’s people,” he stated.
Rouhani further pointed to Iran’s undertakings under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying that Iran voluntarily implements the Additional Protocol of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and in return expects that the IAEA fairly monitor the implementation of the JCPOA.
Accompanied by a four-member delegation, including his deputies, Amano arrived in Tehran to attend a session of the Iranian parliament’s Special Commission for Reviewing the JCPOA and facilitate the process of implementing the Road-map signed between Iran and the IAEA.
The two sides on July 14 signed a Road-map agreement in the Austrian capital of Vienna to resolve all the past and present outstanding issues related to Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
On the same day, Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) finalized the text of the JCPOA, a lasting deal that would end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s nuclear program.
The IAEA has been given the role of verifying Iran’s commitments under the deal.
