Iran’s Syria Peace Plan to Be Made Public after Finalization: Diplomat

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian announced that the country’s proposal to resolve the protracted Syrian crisis will be made public after its finalization.

Speaking after his meeting with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini in the Belgian capital of Brussels on Tuesday, Amir Abdollahian said the two sides held consultations about Iran’s peace plan for Syria.

“In the overall consultations we had with Ms. Mogherini today and those in Moscow with the envoy of Mr. Putin (the Russian president) and Mr. Bogdanov (the Russian deputy foreign minister) and with some of our friends in the region, we discussed the details of (Iran’s plan),” the Iranian deputy minister said.

The details of the plan will be released after finalizing these ideas and turning them into a political plan, he added.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has previously proposed a four-point peace plan on the Syrian crisis. The initiative calls for a national unity government, a ceasefire, fighting terrorism and constitutional reforms in the violence-torn Arab nation, according to Zarif.

Amir Abdollahian further said Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Meqdad is slated to pay an official visit to Iran in coming days to further discuss Tehran’s proposal.

In a separate meeting in Brussels, the Iranian diplomat held talks with Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs of the European External Action Service Helga Schmid.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from various groups, including the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to the United Nations, more than 240,000 people have been killed and one million wounded in the conflict.
In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.

Earlier on June 2, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the resistance of the Syrian government and people against foreign-backed terrorist groups in the Arab country, saying that Tehran is determined to side with Damascus to the end of the crisis.
