EP Urges Concerted Fight on Terrorism in Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz said resolving a prolonged civil war in Syria requires concerted action against terrorist groups in the Arab country.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in Tehran on Saturday, Schulz stressed that all parties need to join hands to battle against terrorists in Syria.
The European diplomat also expressed optimism about the outcomes of the international talks on Syria, hoping that the negotiations would proceed well.
Pointing to his talks with the Iranian speaker on the relations between Tehran and the European Parliament, Schulz said they held important discussions on efforts to make up for the past, adding that Iran and Europe drifted apart over the last decade.
The conclusion of the nuclear talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) has opened the door for dialogue between Iran and Europe, the German MEP added, saying his talks with Larijani involved efforts to fulfill the interests of the two sides.
Back in July, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini also paid a visit to Tehran days after Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) managed to finalize the text of a lasting deal over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
Mogherini, who coordinated the nuclear diplomacy with Iran on behalf of the six powers, has stressed that implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will have far-reaching effects on Iran, its ties with Europe and the international community and also on the Middle East region.
