Iran: Document on Arak Reactor to be Finalized by Monday

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said an official document on redesigning the country’s heavy-water reactor in Arak is going to be endorsed by the whole parties to a final agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program by Monday.

The official document on redesigning Arak reactor is going to foreign ministers of Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) for signature, Araqchi told reporters in Vienna.

The process of endorsement of the document is underway in a rotating manner, the Iranian diplomat noted, saying the signatures will be collected by Monday.

Tehran and the Group 5+1 (also known as P5+1 or E3+3) on July 14 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

The nuclear deal would terminate all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran after coming into force.

According to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), “Iran will redesign and rebuild a modernised heavy water research reactor in Arak, based on an agreed conceptual design, using fuel enriched up to 3.67 %, in a form of an international partnership which will certify the final design.”

The JCPOA stipulates that, “Except for the first core load, all of the activities for redesigning and manufacturing of the fuel assemblies for the redesigned reactor will be carried out in Iran… This international partnership will include participating E3/EU+3 parties, Iran and such other countries as may be mutually determined.”
