Iran Handball Team Defeats Japan in Olympic Qualifier

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Iranian national handball team earned its third victory in a row defeating Japan 31-27 in Group B of the 2015 Asian Qualification Tournament on Wednesday.

The Iranian team started the campaign with a 39-31 win over Oman on Saturday.

Irfan Smajlagic’s men then defeated Uzbekistan 33-18 on Monday.

The Iranian team has a difficult task ahead when it faces host Qatar on Friday.

The event kicked off in Doha, Qatar, on November 14 and will finish on November 23.

Iran has been placed in group B of the tournament along with Qatar, Uzbekistan, Japan, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Group A is made up of Australia, Bahrain, South Korea, Iraq, Kuwait and China.

The gold medal winner in the competition will qualify for the Olympics.

The handball tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will consist of twelve men and women teams each.
