Iran, Oman to Stage Joint Naval Exercise Next Week
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Navy commander announced on Sunday that his troops are going to hold a joint naval drill with the Omani forces at the Persian Gulf in the next few days.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with a high-ranking delegation of Omani Navy officers in Tehran, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the joint exercise, to be held in east of the Strait of Hormuz, will last until Thursday.
The purpose of the upcoming war game is to exercise rescue and relief operations, and ensure maritime security for trade vessels and oil tankers that pass through the strategic strait in the Persian Gulf, he added.
As regards the meeting with the Omani officials, Sayyari said they discussed naval cooperation between Tehran and Muscat, exchanging military instructors and cadets, technical cooperation on the repair, maintenance and overhaul of naval equipment and reciprocal visits by the two countries’ fleets.
Iran and Oman have held several naval drills in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman in recent years.
