Canada to Annul Anti-Tehran Sanctions, Normalize Ties: Dion
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion announced that Ottawa plans to annul its sanctions on Iran following the inception of the JCPOA between the Islamic Republic and world powers and the subsequent termination of sanctions.
In an address to the House of Commons on Tuesday, Dion said that Canada will lift its sanctions on Iran, Reuters reported.
Stressing that Canada will normalize its ties with Iran “in a speedy fashion”, Dion said Ottawa would look to open its embassy in Tehran.
It broke diplomatic ties with Iran in September 2012.
Talking to reporters outside the House of Commons, the Canadian foreign affairs minister said if Airbus is permitted to sell airplanes to Iran, then his country’s aircraft maker Bombardier Inc should be allowed to export there as well.
Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had expressed willingness to restore diplomatic ties with Iran in the wake of the removal of anti-Iran sanctions.
"That is something positive and I expect there will be (diplomatic) links now between Canada and Iran," he said.
The move by Ottawa came after Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini announced last week in a joint statement that the implementation of the nuclear deal finalized between Tehran and world powers back in July 2015 has officially been started.
The announcement was made after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed Iran’s commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
