Iranian Minister: Extension of Voting Time Possible Due to High Turnout

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli announced that due to the massive participation of the people in the ongoing elections on Friday, there is a possibility to extend the voting time.

Attending the Interior Ministry’s Election Headquarters in Tehran on Friday morning, Rahmani Fazli said according to law, the voting time in crowded constituencies can be extended.

“The voting time is 10 hours, but in every constituency where we need extension of voting time due to high turnout, it will be done so according to the law,” he noted.

The minister also expressed the hope that the Islamic Republic would witness “healthy and glorious elections” in a way that help boost the nation’s power and dignity.

Earlier in the day, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei called on the Iranian nation to participate in the polls to boost the country’s honor and strengthen its independence.

“Anyone who loves Iran, who loves the Islamic Republic, who loves national glory, dignity and grandeur, should take part in the elections,” Ayatollah Khamenei stated in Tehran, after casting ballots.

Polls have opened on Friday morning for the parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections, being held simultaneously across Iran, and are scheduled to be closed in 10 hours unless the voting time is extended upon the Interior Ministry's decision.

Some 54.9 million Iranians are eligible to cast their votes in the two elections.
