Iran to Host Asia Oceania Postal Congress

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran will play host to the 2017 congress of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) for Asia and Oceania, an official announced.

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on the occasion of the World Post Day, celebrated each year on October 9, Managing Director of Iran’s Post Company Hossein Mehri said the 2017 Asia and Oceania congress will be held in Iran.

He also highlighted Iran’s active presence in the recent Universal Postal Congress held in Turkey, saying Iran was awarded the silver sign in the conference for quality management of postal services.

The 26th UPU congress was held in Istanbul from September 20 to October 7, with Iran’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi in attendance.

During the congress, known as the supreme authority of the UPU that convenes every four years, Iran was elected to the UPU Council of Administration.

Representatives from 192 UPU member gathered at the congress to set the course for 2017-2020.

Iran became a member of the UPU in 1877, three years after the organization was established.

Since 1948, the UPU is part of the United Nations family as a specialized agency.
